The veterans had the better of their junior counterparts on Sunday, 7 January 2001, beating them to the tune of 6.5 - 0.5. Although the final result was a heavy defeat for the Juniors' team the actual play was much more hard-fought than indicated by the score-line.
On first board Peter Sammut Briffa following his recent success at the Alekhine's Memorial Tournament beat Colin Pace, former Junior Champion and one of the top rated players in Malta after a tough struggle and a time-induced blunder on the part of Pace. On Second Board Victor Cilia Vincenti, a National Team Member from the last Olympiads, beat Horace Cassar, following a tense match that saw both players in time trouble. On third board, Duncan Vella, carrying the responsibility of his new International Rating, got the better of the promising Andre' Lupi who is improving rapidly.
Another up and coming youngster, Charles Sinn had a good game against visiting Briton, Don Heron, but however the older man's experience told in the end. The Player of the Match for the Juniors was Vincent Marmara' who although playing a much higher rated Ivan Attard managed to fight his opponent to a draw and thus avoided a whitewash for his team. The match was sealed by victories from Anthony Muscat Baron over Konstantin Koushenin and Albert Zammit against Daniel D' Agostino. Joe J. Grech officiated the event which was again held this year after a brief break in tradition.
