Preliminaries '96
The Preliminaries is the first tournament of the Maltese Championship
Cycle. The top 6 qualify to the Candidates tournament.
German player George Laborno won the preliminaires tournament with 6.5/7 pts.
He drew only with Claude Tabone who finished joint 2nd with Horace Cassar.
Brian Vella finished 4th on 4.5 pts while the last two who qualified
to the Candidates were Anthony Muscat Baron and eleven-year-old Daniel Abela
whose last drawn game enabled him to overtake Thamer Mohammad.
